From Wagon Shop to Arboretum Estate
Lisle was settled in 1832 by James and Luther Hatch, who ran the area's first wagon and blacksmith shops, and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy line reached the settlement in 1864. The Village of Lisle wasn't formally incorporated until June 26, 1956, well after Joy Morton -- founder of the Morton Salt Company -- had already bought land there in 1909 for a rural estate he called Thornhill, which he incorporated as the Morton Arboretum in 1922.
Newer Incorporation, Same Old Clay
Because Lisle didn't formally incorporate until 1956, most of its housing stock is mid-century or newer, built directly into DuPage County's moisture-retentive clay rather than onto an older 19th-century footing. That clay expands when saturated and contracts in dry weather, generating the kind of lateral pressure against foundation walls that shows up as stair-step cracking or sticking doors well before any structural distress is visible from the yard.
