The Town That Took the County Seat
Wheaton traces to 1837, when Erastus Gary and brothers Warren and Jesse Wheaton settled the area from New England; a railroad sign reading 'Wheaton Depot' gave the community its name, and it incorporated as a village in 1859 with Warren Wheaton as its first president. In 1867 the Wheaton brothers led a campaign that shifted the DuPage County seat from Naperville to Wheaton by a margin of just 51 votes, and the county government complex has anchored the town ever since.
