Built on a Ridge Over the DuPage River
Woodridge takes its name from the wooded high ground it occupies above the DuPage River's East Branch -- Surety Builders, led by Albert Kaufman, began developing the site in 1958, and the village incorporated on August 24, 1959 with fewer than 500 residents in a single 109-home subdivision. Many of those first homes were bought by veterans using GI Bill-insured loans, and the population passed 22,000 by 1980.
Ridge Grading Meets Expansive Clay
Building on a ridge above a river branch means Woodridge's original subdivision required more grading and fill than a flat-lot development would have, and the DuPage County clay beneath that grading is the same expansive, moisture-retentive soil found across the rest of the county. A foundation assessment on one of Woodridge's original GI Bill-era homes has to account for both the original site grading and more than six decades of seasonal soil movement since.
